Maple - Inferno Sugar

It has been a long time coming to find a reliable and beautiful sugar maple tree that was hardy in Alberta's harsh climate. Many people have seen the rare, mature sugar maple here and there on the prairies but they were never sold at the local nurseries. This is the original maple syrup-producing tree and we finally have the proper choice for our climate. Introducing the Inferno Sugar Maple. This tree has withstood -45c in St. Paul, Alberta and continues to grow fantastically. The fall color is one of the best that can be found anywhere on the planet. It has explosions of reds and oranges which manifest uniquely every year so you have something new to look forward to each fall. The tree looks like it is lit up in flames during autumn. Typically the fall colors show up around late September or early October and last one to two weeks. The leaves are very big (something that is not typical of trees found in Alberta). This tree will become very large and it should be placed in a spot where it can grow. Keep it away from overhead power lines or buildings. Full sun is best. It is a very versatile tree that can handle all types of soils and has drought tolerance once established (typically after 3-5 years). It can grow upto 1-2ft per year and rarely 3ft if given a fertilizer like Neptune's Harvest Fish Fertilizer. Growing Requirements in Alberta: The Inferno Sugar Maple is very hardy for our winters and will do exceedingly well in Edmonton if given the proper water requirements. It will need deep watering the first couple of summers especially when there is drier weather. I would continue to deep water during drought summers for the first 5 years if you want it to be at it's best. The tree originally comes from a location that gets double the precipitation that Alberta does. Turn on the hose and leave it on a slower drip so the water sinks in and leave it there until the whole root ball has been given a good soak.
Inferno Sugar Maple — The Legendary Fire Tree 🔥
For years, sugar maples were the unicorn of the prairies—rare, unreliable, and impossible to plant with confidence. The Inferno Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum 'Jeferno') changes everything. Tested at -45°C in St. Paul and thriving, this is the real maple syrup tree, finally built for Alberta.
Fall? It doesn’t just change color—it erupts. Explosions of red and waves of orange create your own personal firestorm 🌅 for a short, unforgettable window in late September to early October.
Through the growing season, it builds a dense, powerful canopy with oversized leaves—bigger, fuller, and more established than other prairie trees.
Rebel take: The maple everyone wishes they had… finally made for here.
Mature Size: 40' x 30'
Why it belongs in your yard:
- Legendary sugar maple—Alberta-hardy
- Unreal red + orange fall fire 🔥
- Massive, classic maple leaves (rare on the prairies)
- Dense, shade-producing canopy
- Strong growth (1–2 ft/year, sometimes more 👀)
- Handles tough soils + drought once established
- Cold-hardy to Zone 2 (tested in St. Paul)
Rebel tip: Give it full sun and room to grow—not a squeeze-it-in tree. Water during dry periods in the early years, and it will reward you for decades.
