Juniper (Upright) - Moonglow

The Moonglow Juniper is a fantastic substitute for a Brandon or Skybound Cedar if you do not want to spend the extra time watering every summer to keep your evergreens alive. This juniper grows extremely dense and will fill in a hedge beautifully in our climate. They are medium-growing speed and can handle severe drought once established. The blue color in the summer is a unique and welcoming sight and a hedge of Moonglow Juniper is a showstopper for any passersby. We have planted a row of Moonglow Juniper at a business in St. Paul, Alberta, and the pictures posted here show their vigor when planted in rock with absolutely no extra care or love. They will grow even better if you offer them a little fertilizer and water, but it's not necessary. Plant the Moonglow Juniper when you are looking for an accent tree in a small yard or want a lower maintenance hedge option versus the cedar.
Moonglow Juniper — The Low-Water Hedge Hack ❄️
Tired of babysitting cedars? The Moonglow Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Moonglow') is smarter, tougher, and low-maintenance. Plant it once—it grows dense, fills in, and creates a solid privacy hedge without constant care.
Cool, silvery-blue needles pop year-round, especially in winter, adding structure and style.
Rebel take: Cedars need attention. This one earns it.
Mature Size: 16' x 5'
Why it belongs in your yard:
- Ultra-dense growth = real privacy 🔥
- Unique silvery-blue color year-round ❄️
- Way easier than cedars (less watering 👀)
- Drought-tolerant once established
- Ideal for hedges, screens, or feature planting
- Deer-resistant + extremely hardy
- Proven Zone 2 performer in Alberta

Growing Requirements in Alberta: This juniper is one of the easiest trees to grow in Alberta and it will not require any special care. Water well during the first couple summers and fertilize when looking for extra growth. The tree is happy with all types of soils and can handle sun or part shade.
