Description

The Regal Prince Oak is a quickly rising star in the Edmonton, Alberta area with homeowners. It is also being utilized much more frequently by the city of Edmonton in boulevard plantings. This tightly columnar tree grows quickly once established and will become quite drought tolerant. It is A great replacement tree for the demise of the Swedish aspen which became almost too popular in Edmonton for its good. The Regal Prince Oak is great in small front yards or in rows as privacy screens. It will grow the same unique, columnar shape every time, so you know what you are getting. In our climate, the ultimate size of this tree is most likely around 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide. It will get larger in warmer climates. There are not too many special requirements for this oak tree except to remember to plant it in soil that drains well and to water it well the first couple of summers so drought does not induce decline. Use a mulch bowl around the roots for extra protection.

Regal Prince Oak — The Columnar King 👑

This isn’t just a tree—it’s a vertical statement.

The Regal Prince Oak (Quercus robur x bicolor 'Long') is quickly taking over Edmonton landscapes… and for good reason. Where other trees fade out (looking at you, Swedish Aspen), this one steps in stronger, tougher, and built to last. It grows fast, holds its shape, and doesn’t wander.
Clean, columnar, and consistent—every single time. No surprises. No weird growth. Just a tall, narrow wall of strength that fits perfectly in modern yards. Use it as a front yard feature… or line them up and create a living privacy wall that actually looks intentional.

And then there’s the leaves.
Thick, dark green, frost-hardened—and they stay. While everything else drops early, this oak holds on deep into fall… often into November… sometimes even through winter.❄️ It’s one of the few trees in Alberta that refuses to quit early. This is what you plant when you’re done with flimsy, overused trees and want something that actually performs.

Rebel take:
The Swedish Aspen had its moment. This is the upgrade.

Mature Size: 30' x 10'

Why it belongs in your yard:

  • Strong, predictable columnar shape
  • Ideal for tight spaces + modern designs
  • Perfect for privacy rows or front yard statements
  • Holds leaves late (sometimes into winter 👀)
  • Extremely cold hardy (tested to -46°C in St. Paul)
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • City-approved boulevard tree ✅

Rebel tip:
Give it well-draining soil, water it properly for the first couple summers, and add a mulch ring to lock in moisture. After that… it’s on its own.
